About the VBSA City Clubs Circuit
The Victorian Billiards and Snooker Association City Clubs Circuit was started in 1990 by J.R 'Bill' Browning (Melbourne Club) and David Pitt (VBSA ), who were both keen to see a pennant billiards and snooker competition establlshed between some of Melbourne's oldest clubs. Bill liaised with the candidate clubs while David ran the administration.

Since 1990 the competition has been keenly contested, usually by six clubs. In 2016 the competition was expanded to eight clubs, and in 2023 to nine. Clubs which have competed over the years include the Australian Club (1991-), the Athenaeum Club (1990-), the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club (2016-), the Kelvin Club (1990-1991, 2023-), the Melbourne Club (1990-), the Melbourne Savage Club (2016-), the Naval & Military Club (1991-2008, as RACV Warriors 2009-), the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (1990-), and the Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club (1995-).

Bill Browning donated the perpetual trophy, modestly engraved 'Donated by Melbourne Club players'. Following Bill's death the trophy was renamed the J.R. Browning trophy.
